Jan 1 Sun Baxtalo Nevo Bersh! – Happy New Year! .
Jan 24 Tue Workshop “Roma and Access to Public Health Care” – Skopje, Macedonia .
Jan 25 Wed ERIO’S Conference: Remembering the Forgotten Roma Holocaust – Brussels, Belgium
The European Roma Information Office (ERIO) invites you to attend the conference “Remembering the Forgotten Roma Holocaust” which will be held on 25th of January from 09:00-16:00 in the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), Conferences Unit, VM3 (2nd floor), Van Maerlant Building, Rue Van Maerlant 2, 1040 Brussels.

Throughout the Third Reich Roma were subjected to Nazi Germany’s persecution and genocide. Yet even after the Roma Holocaust (known as the Porajmos), Roma remain the most hated and discriminated minority in Europe. Living primarily on the margins of society, they remain uniquely marginalised across the continent and their rights are denied.

The objectives of the conference are to:

Raise awareness about the Roma Holocaust (Porajmos)
Generate debate and reflection by linking the Roma persecution during Nazism and their ongoing discrimination
Demonstrate the impact of the Roma Holocaust on today’s Roma and attitudes of non-Roma
The conference will be held in English and Romanes translation will be available

Feb 27 Mon 10:00 -11:00 The Launch Of The Report Human Rights Of Roma And Travellers In Europe – Council Of Europe liaison Office with the EU , Brussels The Launch Of The Report Human Rights Of Roma And Travellers In Europe

Thomas Hammarberg, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, will present the first comprehensive report on the human rights situation of Roma and Travellers covering all 47 member states of the Council of Europe.

In many European countries, the Roma and Traveller populations are still denied basic human rights and suffer blatant racism. In times of economic crisis, the tendency to direct frustration against scapegoats increases – and Roma and Travellers appear to be easy targets.

The purpose of this report is to encourage a constructive discussion on policies towards Roma and Travellers in Europe today, focusing on what must be done in order to put an end to the discrimination and marginalisation they suffer.

Mar 30 Fri How to talk about the Roma? – A debate about Laszlo Pesty’s documentary – Budapest, Hungary How to talk about the Roma?

Last week, almost 1,500 petitioners protested against a film broadcast by public television about the relationship of Roma and non-Roma in Hungary. According to the petition, Lбszlу Pesty’s film “violates the dignity of Hungarian Gypsies, as the portrayal of the community not only intensifies prejudice against the Roma but it also intimidates Hungarian viewers by suggesting that they are potential victims of the Gypsies.”

The conflict highlights the fact that more than 20 years after the fall of communism, there is still no accepted way to talk about the Roma-non Roma problems in a tactful yet pointed and relevant way. That also limits the effectiveness of our search for a solution.

Under pressure from the protest, the management of the public television refrained from airing the film again, but the controversy over the issue is still unsettled. Where are the limits of free speech? Has the film wronged the perception of the Roma? Is it betrayal if a Roma talks in a sympathetic tone about the prejudice of
the police? What is to be said about the majority-minority coexistence? Are there taboos?

Invited by the Communication Center X (XKK), the main figures of the most heated debate on recent Roma issues will gather for the very first time. Istvбn Forgбcs, who was in the center of Lбszlу Pesty’s documentary, and Jenő Setйt, who started the petition against the film, will be the key characters of the discussion, accompanied by film maker Lбszlу Pesty and sociologist Йva Kovбcs, who will debate about the role and duty of the media.

The moderator will be journalist Szilvia Varrу, head of XKK.

Join us on Friday, March 30, 2012, at 4 PM, at E10,

Venue: VI. district, Eцtvцs utca 10., http://g.co/maps/65k7a
